I would like to start by thanking you for letting me share this story with you. I started work on “Hunting House Cats” over four years ago. Hunting House Cats is a semi-autobiographical, dark, coming-of-age story that follows three young men stuck between high school and the rest of their lives.
But before I get into the details of the book, I would first like to tell you a little about myself. My background lies primarily in film and television. “House Cats” is my first venture into the world of graphic novels but it certainly won’t be my last. I love being able to tell a story in absolute fullness, getting into to characters far deeper than you can with film. Since I was I child I knew I wanted to be a part of the entertainment industry. When I was seven I assumed that the actors ran the show, so acting seemed like the obvious route to take. After losing my role on YTV’s “System Crash” for giving the director story ideas I realized that my calling came from behind the camera. I graduated from the Los Angles branch of the New York Film Academy in 2003. Shortly after returning home to Canada I continued making films in hopes of breaking into the biz. Being young, industrious, and maybe even a little insane, I decided to write, direct, and produce a teen pilot titled “4 Years to Life”. The intention was to use the pilot to gain attention from the Canadian television industry. Once I had completed the pilot I held a “prom themed” premiere screening at the Paramount Theater in Toronto. I wasn’t sure how to get industry insiders to come, so I researched, Googled and IMDB’d every TV professional I could find and sent them a pair of tickets. The turn out ended up an overwhelming 600+ people. When the dust settled, I landed a meeting with CTV and within 3 months we where developing an hour long drama series, “Lost City”, under the “Writer Only Program”. Since then I have developed many original concepts with several production companies including Barna Alper (now E1) and Epitome Pictures.
And now the book, like a cross between a John Hughes and Tarinteno film “House Cats” takes a uniquely dark look at the late teen experience. Although semi-autobiographically the story isn’t told from my point of view. I was inspired to write this story when I found out my once close friend Ian had been telling people at his university that I was dead. At first I was both very confused and disturbed but then I started to wonder why. It forced me to reevaluate our friendship and the final summer we spent together partying and chasing girls. What I realized is that Ian had felt stuck in the party life style we had set for ourselves and in order to move on he had to make me the villain and then eventually killed me off in his own mind. So when I set out to write this book I decided that it would be far more interesting to take a look at our world through his eyes. I looked at myself as a bad guy and it ended up really opening my mind and by writing this book I also put a chapter of my life to rest. When I finally finished writing I teamed up with a Toronto based artist named Jack little. Primarily a painter he brought a very interesting look to the book and even contributed some interesting ideas that eventually appeared in the book. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Jack and I’m sure I will work with him again in the future. This book will take you on a wild ride. What starts off seeming like an average teen romp quickly takes a road less traveled.
